Community Co-Chairs
We are excited to invite you to ARCMET — the first EAA-community entirely dedicated to archaeometallurgy!
The idea for founding this community emerged during the EAA in Rome. After several years of hosting sessions with a core group of archaeologists dedicated to metals, metallurgy and archaeomaterials, we realized in 2024 that the single-session format no longer met the growing interest in archaeometallurgy .
We decided to organize and openly declare our shared interest in ancient metals within the EAA. As a result, we have the honor to launch our new ARCMET homepage and LinkedIn group. Along with the homepage comes a community logo, designed by Heide Nørgaard and digitized by Michael Neiß and Ragnar Saage. But what is the message behind the label?
ARCMET’s primary goals are to foster regular knowledge exchange within archaeometallurgy, to support methodological development, and to integrate metallurgy into archaeological research in a broader sense. To make metallurgy an integral part of research and fieldwork within archaeology, we promote consistent exchanges of ideas, methods, and methodologies through EAA conference sessions, social media, and our community website. Here, ARCMET will serve as a platform. It will provide an easy entry point for transdisciplinary scholars, fostering collaborations. Moreover, it will support students who are eager to learn how metallurgy helps us solve the mysteries of archaeology!
To keep things streamlined, ARCMET’s annual conference sessions will henceforth be gathering under the label ‘Metals & Metallurgy.’ We look forward to seeing you there and encourage you to share your updates – whether they relate to advanced methodologies, laboratory comparisons, access to scientific facilities ... or something completely different! In addition to our recurring EAA sessions, we are committed to making good use of our ARCMET library to facilitate open access to the latest research. With rising publication fees that increasingly block easy access to research, we intend to bridge the information gap by allowing our community members to share their recent publications within our forum.
Welcome to our new EAA-community!
