Widening Horizons
Welcome to Kiel! We very much look forward to meeting you here at Kiel University for the 27th Annual Meeting of the EAA from 8 to 11 September 2021.
We are aware, that the 21 meeting will be special. After a long period with only limited personal contacts and interaction we very much hope that for the Kiel meeting we will be a little bit back to normal. With on-site sessions, informal talks during the coffee breaks, sitting face to face at the dinner table, and non-virtual excursions to exciting places. But no one knows what the future will bring, and hence we are planning for both, a meeting on-site and a virtual one as well.
Anyway, after all we are still positive to welcome you here in Kiel. The city is located directly at the shores of the Baltic Sea in the very north of Germany. With the fjord, the sea reaches right into the city centre and the harbour serves as a gateway to Scandinavia and the Baltic States. Kiel’s beautiful beaches and marinas and a diverse cultural scene make it a great place to spend some enjoyable summer days apart from the Annual Meeting. Cafes, clubs, pubs and restaurants are of plenty, making sure that you won't have a dull moment.
In recent years, Kiel University has become a rapidly evolving centre for interdisciplinary archaeological research in Germany. The EAA Annual Meeting 2021 will be organised by the Johanna Mestorf Academy (JMA), which represents the research focus ‘Societal, Environmental and Cultural Change’, one of four research foci at Kiel University. The meeting will be organized in conjunction with the State Archaeology Department of Schleswig-Holstein, the Centre for Baltic and Scandinavian Archaeology (ZBSA), and the Archaeological Museum Schloss Gottorf.
Within this stimulating research environment, the great infrastructure provided by Kiel University, and the relaxed holiday atmosphere of a Kiel summer, we look forward to welcoming you to a vibrant and fruitful Annual Meeting 2021!
