Santa Maria del Mar architecture
14th century Catalan Gothic architecture has a strong personality. Particularly outstanding is the sober horizontal structure of its buildings. A strong case can be made that the basilica of Santa Maria del Mar is the clearest example of this type of building in Barcelona throughout the 14th century.

The side aisles are half the span of the central nave and this, in turn, shows that the geometric composition of the project was based on a system known in the Middle Ages as “ad quadratum”. This feature is one of the most significant examples during the entire Gothic period. The feeling you get is one of lightness. Why? Mainly because of the sixteen 1,60 meter thick octagonal columns. The capitels start from the intertwining arches that crisscross the 13,2 meter central nave.

Including the aspe, the basilica is 80 meters long and 33 meters wide if we combine the central nave, the side aisles and the chapel naves. If we take into account that the central nave is also 33 meters high, the architectural design, seen from the front, fits inside a perfect circumference.

The keystones in the vault were built first starting with the presbytery and moving one by one towards the main entrance. These were restored and colored between 1971 and 1985.

Santa Maria del Mar History
Shortly after the arrival of Christianity to the Roman colony of Barcino, modern-day Barcelona, a small Christian community was started near the sea and just outside the walls. There was a Christian necropolis here where St Eulàlia, martyr, was probably buried in 303 A.D. This site might have been the place where a chapel was first built, known then as Santa Maria de Les Arenes, St. Mary of the Sea Sands. By the end of the 7th century, the existing structure was already known as “Santa Maria del Mar”.

The city grew very quickly during the 13th century in the neighborhood we now call “La Ribera” (-the Seashore-) but back then known as Vilanova del Mar, and the area was well-known for its ship-building, imports-exports of all kinds and its workshops for artisans and craftsmen. These trades and businesses are still reflected today in the street names of the area. This was the time when many of the wealthy merchants and minor nobility built their houses on Montcada Street. This material progress, plus the piety of the time, demanded a church of more impressive dimensions than the one they had. Church authorities supported the initiative, merchants donated money to the cause and King Pere III gave his permission to extract stone from the quarry and use it to build the present church. Workers loaded and unloaded the ships (the so-called “bastaixos” or porters), fishermen and the simple people used their hands and backs and, of course, their boats to transport the stone they needed from the nearby mountain of Montjuic. The cornerstone of the present temple was laid on 25 March 1329, as can be seen by reading the two inscriptions on each side of the door on Santa Maria Street, one in Catalan and the other one in Latin.

Welcome Reception

Where:  Welcome Reception will be offered at El Born Centre for Culture and Memory, the former El Born Market situated in Barcelona city centre.
When: Wednesday 5 September 2018, 19:00 - 21:00
http://elbornculturaimemoria.barcelona.cat/en/the-center/

Cultural and memorial centre
El Born CCM is a space created by the city to encourage and promote the memory of local and national events, as well as those affecting communities around the world. Four lines of activity make this goal possible: actions in the neighbourhood to inform about the events that have left their mark on urban memory and local history; the organisation of events and debates at the headquarters of El Born CCM; the provision of continuous training; and the offer of a range of cultural and artistic events that promote national programmes and international projects related to memory and intangible heritage.

El Born CCM is located in the building that was formerly El Born Market, which was opened in 1876. The building is a good example of iron-frame architecture.

An archaeological site was found in the subsoil, with traces of streets and houses from the Barcelona of the 1700s. It is a testament both to life in the city at the time and the consequences of the siege of 1714.

El Born CCM recognises the significance of the many historical layers that make up the site and its past, and is also aware of the symbolic importance of the building: a space for the supply and exchange of food and other goods, which El Born CCM has converted into a forum for meetings and debates, a place for learning and contemplating works of art that reflect on the memory of the facts and events that form human culture.

The archaeological site
The El Born archaeological site offers a faithful picture of daily life in the Barcelona of the early 18th century and the possibility to walk the streets of the city that resisted the siege by Philip V’s troops in 1713 and 1714 until the final assault and surrender on 11 September.

Catalonia, as a border territory for most of the Middle Ages, is an ideal location for the observation, study and understanding the evolution of castles. This grew even truer when the region became a place of exchange for knowledge and technical advances due its geographical location and its historical context of confrontation-relation between two very powerful yet permeable cultures in the Iberian Peninsula: Muslims and Christian.
