Half Day Excursion - Cogul

5 September

The Roca dels Moros of Cogul, Les Garrigues region, province of Lleida, Catalonia, is one of the most outstanding rock art sites of the rock art of the Mediterranean Basin. The site is the first set of prehistoric paintings scientifically documented in Catalonia and, since its discovery in 1908, it became internationally known. In Cogul there are human and animal motifs corresponding to the Levantine and Schematic styles. The most singular scene is formed by the central figures. This scene, painted in Levantine style, stands out for both exceptional technique and by the scene represented in it. In this unique group of figures there are several pair of women apparently dancing around a naked man with an exaggerated phallus. Many scholars have interpreted the scene as the depiction of a fertility cult. The valley of the Set river where the site is located had been occupied from the Paleolithic but the art was made during  the post-palaeolithic. It was painted by the last groups of hunters-gatherers and first agriculturalists living in the area. The site continued to be of importance in later periods as seen by Iberian and Latin inscriptions made in the site dating to the Iron Age and Roman periods. In 1998 the rock art of the Mediterranean Basin on the Iberian Peninsula was declared World Heritage by UNESCO.
