With utmost sadness we report that our highly esteemed EAA Secretary, Karen Waugh, died on the afternoon of July 16 following a short illness.
Elected in 2017, Karen was a highly efficient and effective Secretary of EAA at a time when our Secretariat is undergoing significant development. In spite of her extensive duties in leading Vestigia, the important Dutch heritage and archaeology company, she was willing to devote a great part of her time, energy and wealth of professional experience to accept this responsibility in the EAA. We all continue to be very grateful to her for this. She was very highly thought of within EAA for her participation and her considered and wise contribution to a wide range of levels of practice, especially on archaeological practice, heritage management and particularly Environmental Impact Assessments.
A member of EAA almost from the very beginning, Karen served as editor of this publication, of The European Archaeologist and was co-opted as a member of the EAA Executive Board from 2000 – 2004. Following that time Karen was deeply involved in the Professional Associations Committee, and the Discovering the Archaeologists of Europe project, leading the Netherlands report for the first phase of that Europe-wide study. Always a dedicated and active member of EAA, Karen was more recently a key member of EAA Statutes Advisory Group.
Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with her husband Wilfried, their children, other family members and our fellow colleagues in her company, Vestigia. We will miss her but will remember her positive and professional engagement and carry on in that spirit.
