The 8th Annual Meeting of the European Association of Archaeologists took place in Thessaloniki, Greece, 24-28 September 2002.
The 8th EAA Annual Meeting in Thessaloniki, Greece, was organized jointly by the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, and by the Hellenic Ministry of Culture. The Meeting was held at the Philosophy School of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, located in the city center. The Meeting ran from Tuesday 24th - Saturday 28th of September 2002, while Sunday the 29th was devoted to excursions to archaeological sites and museums. Opening Ceremony was held in the Main Amphitheatre of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and a welcome reception followed in the AULA. EAA Annual Party took place on the Thursday evening, and closing dinner was organized on the Saturday. Additional culture events were offered free of charge to attendees during Friday afternoon.
The academic programme consisted of four main themes:
- Theory and Interpretation of Material Culture
- Cultural Heritage and the Management of the Archaeological Record
- Archaeology in the Modern World
- Paths to Diversity: Regional Perspectives
850 delegates from 48 countries attended the 8th Annual Meeting which is the highest figure ever in the history of the EAA.
