Tokaj and medieval fortresses in northern Hungary (two days)

Description

The world famous Tokaj wine region and its surroundings indulge visitors with a rich cultural and gastronomic heritage. The tour not only includes visits to key sites of the region’s medieval history and a medieval-themed lunch, but participants can also experience first-hand some of the so-called ’Hungarikums’, Hungarian Values, such as the Tokaj cultural landscape as well as the Hollóházi porcelain.

Key archaeological/heritage attractions: World Heritage Site Tokaj; medieval castle and cannon casting foundry, Sárospatak; medieval castles, Füzér and Regéc

Approximate schedule

Day 1
  • Departure from Budapest in the morning
  • Quick stop at Muhi, visit to the National Memorial Park of the Muhi Battle
  • Arrival at Tokaj, visit to the World Heritage Wine Museum
  • Medieval inspired lunch at the Castle Restaurant in Sárospatak Castle
  • Guided tour of Sárospatak Castle, the unique cannon casting foundry and the Rákóczi Museum
  • Visit to the tarn of Megyer Mount (short hike to the artificial lake in beautiful setting)
  • Arrival at Tarcal in the late afternoon, check-in at the hotel
  • Dinner and wine tasting at the Gróf Degenfeld Castle Hotel & Restaurant in Tarcal
Day 2
  • Departure to Füzér in the morning, guided tour of the medieval Füzér Castle
  • Visit to the Hollóházi Porcelain Manufactory, hands-on experience at the visitors’ workshop
  • Visit to the open-air geological site of Hegyestű (special volcanic rock formations)
  • Guided tour of the medieval Regéc Castle in the afternoon
  • Return to Budapest in the evening
