Description

The tour concentrates on highlights of the Roman and Árpádian Age heritage of the Balaton region in western Hungary, which also includes some of the most renown wine producing areas of the country and the beautiful Tihany Peninsula.

Key archaeological/heritage attractions: Gorsium-Herculia Roman civil town, Tihany Pennisula, monks’ cave lodges, medieval castle of Szigliget

Approximate schedule

Day 1
  • Departure from Budapest in the morning
  • Guided tour of the open-air archaeological museum of Tác / Gorsium-Herculia (Roman civil town)
  • Lunch at the Márga Bistro (St. Donat Winery)
  • Arrival at Balatonfüred in the afternoon, check-in at the hotel
  • Facultative programmes for the afternoon:
    • Guided sightseeing tour of Balatonfüred, relax at the lakeshore
    • Visit to the so-called ’barátlakások’ on the Tihany Peninsula (monks’ cave lodges from Medieval times)
  • Dinner at the Baricska csárda in Balatonfüred
Day 2
  • Visit to the Árpádian Age (12-13th c. AD) church ruins of Dörgicse
  • OR
  • Visit to the Dörgicse Lavender Farm
  • Visit to the open-air geological site of Hegyestű (special volcanic rock formations)
  • Lunch and wine tasting at the Laposa Wine Estate in Badacsonytomaj
  • Visit to the medieval castle of Szigliget in the afternoon
  • Return to Budapest in the evening
