The booklet “Gender stereotypes in archaeology: a short reflection in image and text”, edited by Laura Coltofean-Arizancu, Bisserka Gaydarska and Uroš Matić, members of the EAA’s Archaeology and Gender in Europe (AGE) Community, is now available open access on the Sidestone Press website (link).
Image: Stereotype 21: “Same-sex practices are a “modern” invention or a disorder.” Image deconstructed by Uroš Matić and illustrated by Nikola Radosavljević.
Funded through an all-or-nothing crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter (link) and supported by the EAA, the booklet is a short, informative critical response by archaeologists to 24 commonly encountered gender stereotypes that exist in archaeological explanations of the past, as well as in contemporary disciplinary practice. Each stereotype is explained and deconstructed through a combination of straightforward and short texts and thought-provoking images. The stereotypes are addressed by archaeologists with expertise on gender in the past as well as in contemporary archaeology, most of them being members of AGE, while the illustrations are created by Serbian award-winning artist Nikola Radosavljević.
