EAA 2017 Maastricht is 6 months away! The sessions for Maastricht have been approved, and the provisional programme is online. The call for papers is open until Wednesday 22 March 2017. We especially encourage all session organizers to pay your registration fees and fulfil all requirements so that members can submit papers to all sessions. This year there are several new formats to choose from. In addition to regular sessions (15 minutes per paper), there will be 6 minutes/6 slides, keynote sessions with discussants, round tables, and discussions of pre-circulated papers. Also, please remember that the deadline for early bird registration is 30 April 2017.

We again call for short articles or opinions on the current state of Open Access in archaeology. All of us seeking funding for archaeological heritage, as well as everyone involved in academic publishing, will have to live with the consequences of OA developments. Funding agencies are constantly changing their requirements, and OA is increasingly important at both national and EU levels. We need to get involved in the process, rather than ignoring it. In particular, the requirements by many funding bodies that grant holders both (1) publish in high-impact peer-reviewed scientific journals, and (2) publish Open Access, will push researchers to pay to publish with large, global publishers. At the same time, many research institutions and universities are finding it impossible to pay the subscriptions fees for these journals and publishers. OA will mitigate some of these problems, but will introduce new problems, so we need to guide and negotiate policies as they develop (see Debate in this issue). We call on our membership to offer your thoughts and opinions on this subject. Not only will this provide knowledge about this topic for everyone, it will also provide information that the EAA can use to address OA in European heritage policies.

We also want to remind you that the EAA Strategic Plan is open for discussion and input from members. This is a good example of, and an opportunity for, engagement using the practical tools on new EAA website, as well as writing to TEA and your elected EAA Board members. What do you need from EAA? How do you think EAA should be managed? Let us know what you think!

On a less cheerful note, archaeology continues to lose valuable experience and old friends. EAA appreciates getting notice of any passing away of former or current EAA members. As a matter not only of courtesy, but also appreciation and solidarity with friends and relatives, EAA will publish an obituary publicly in TEA and on the EAA webpage, and the deceased will receive the tribute of a minute of silence in the Opening Ceremonies of the annual meeting.

In addition to matters concerning EAA governance and the upcoming 23rd Annual Meetings, this issue also contains calls for nominations by members for the EAA Executive Board, the EAA Nominations Committee, and the EAA Heritage Prize for 2017, as well as other announcements, and extensive reporting from our Regional Correspondents in Greece and Turkey. Our next issue, Spring 2017, has a deadline of 15 April 2017. Send your opinions, research updates and conferences to us at tea@e-a-a.org
